"This new species, named Meterchen luti, is a fascinating find, drawing on the nursery rhyme Old Mother Goose. Meterchen means 'mother goose' in ancient Greek, and luti is Latin for 'of the mud', a nod to its discovery in the ancient lakebed."

The study, published in Historical Biology, reveals that the St Bathans goose fossils do not connect to cereopsine geese, contradicting earlier claims. "An earlier theory argued that the St Bathans goose represented the direct ancestors of giant flightless Cnemiornis geese, implying a very long history in Zealandia," says lead author Alan Tennyson of Te Papa. "However, our reassessment supports the later arrival theory, which conflicts with the earlier claims."
